Bismillaah Al-Hamdulillaah wa salatu wa salaamu 'ala rasulullaah
Amma-ba'd
So don't be fooled just because someone praises one shaykh but speaks ill of another who is on exactly the same path; know that something is wrong; know that something is not right!
Student of knowledge Hassan as-Somali (hafidhahullaah), while relaying the highly beneficial advice of Imam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) to Ahlus Sunnah from his an-Nooniyah, said (http://www.dusunnah.com/images/PDFs/the%20advice%20of%20ibn%20qayyim%20to%20ahlus%20su nnah%20from%20his%20an-noonniyyah.pdf), via the explanation of Shaikh al-'Uthaimeen (rahimahullaah):
The Shaykh [al-'Uthaimeen] said: "Sometimes if the people want to harm you, they don't have the ability to harm you the rulership or the government or the leader. They don't have that type of power. They want to harm you; if they could, they would. But they don't have any type of leadership, so they can't harm you with the harm that a ruler can afflict upon you. Sometimes they can't harm you because of your (sharaf) nobility; the people love you and they respect you. Or they can't harm you because of your position with the people. But you will definitely find some harm."
And I'll give an example [concerning] Ash-Shaykh Ibn Baaz and Ash-Shaykh al-Albaani (rahimahumullaah). Al-Hamdulillaah, we know they were upon the same 'aqeedah and same manhaj, but people focused upon ash-Shaykh al-Albaani more than they focused upon Shaykh Ibn Baaz rahimahullaah [meaning people of bid'ah attacked and slandered Shaikh Al-Albaanee more than they attacked and slandered Shaikh Ibn Baaz]. Why? Because Shaykh Ibn Baaz - Al-Hamdulillaah - was supported with power in the Kingdom; he was the muftee. It wasn't easy to attack Ibn Baaz, rahimahullaah. Al-Albaani didn't have a position, so it was easier to attack Shaykh al Albaani. And Ahlul-Bid'ah, the people of innovation, will always choose the easy option.
[During] the time of al-Imam Ahmad (rahimahullaah), they [Ahlul-Bid'ah] would attack the students of Imam Ahmad, but they would not attack [Imam] Ahmad. Why? Because Imam Ahmad was ([B][I]Sahib-us-Sunnah), the Imam of Ahlus-Sunnah. And this is the way - ikhwaan - even in the time of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم , the munafiqoon (hypocrites) would attack the companions (radiallaahu 'anhum ajma'een). But who did they (the hypocrites) really want to attack? The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. *
So sometimes people want to inflict harm upon individuals because they disagree with them, but they may not always be able. So don't be fooled just because someone praises one shaykh but speaks ill of another who is upon exactly the same path. Know that something is wrong; know that something is not right. Na'am...
* Ibn Taymmeeyah (rahimahullaah) was asked: Why do they [the Raafidah] revile the companions?
Ibn Taymmeeyah (rahimahullaah) answered (http://www.spubs.com/sps/downloads/pdf/GSC030003.pdf): "The Raafidah revile the companions and their narrations, but the inner reality of the matter is that they desire revilement of the Messengership (itself)." In another statement, Ibn Taymeeyah (rahimahullaah) said: "For indeed the dispraising of the best of generations, those of whom accompanied the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) is a dispraise of the Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam)." [Majmoo' al-Fataawa, vol. 4, page 429]
