It is Shirk to love anyone as you love Allaah!
A questioner asked: Is it permissible (or appropriate) for a person to make du'aa to Allaah to help that person love the Messenger (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) on the same level as (that person) loves Allaah?
Answer by Shaikh 'Abdullaah al-Jarboo (hafidhahullaah):
I thank the questioner. As for the answer, it must be understood by the Muslim that the major love (MuHabba al-Kubra) that should be upon the hearts is the love of Allaah 'Azza wa Jall (Mighty and Majestic) - and no one should be equal in that regard - and it is not permissible to love anyone for his actual self except Allaah, Tabarak wa Ta'aala.
Loving Allaah is the foundation of the rectification of the hearts. Allaah, Subhanahu wa Ta'aala, is to be loved because He is The True Deity (only One deserving of worship), and He is The Creator of everything, and because of the Beautiful Names and Perfect Attributes that He alone possesses. So He, Subhanahu wa Ta'aala, is to be loved for many reasons.
As for loving other than Allaah - meaning, from the creation - it must meet several conditions.
- The first condition is that it must never be equal to the love of Allaah.
- The second condition is that this love is in accordance with what Allaah commanded, meaning that we love whom Allaah loves, or whom Allaah commands that we love, or we love whom Allaah made it permissible to love.
Then after that, we don't love the Prophet (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) for his self; rather we love him because Allaah, Tabarak wa Ta'aala, loves him and commanded us to love him.
And it is not permissible for the Muslim to love whom Allaah hates - such as His enemies - nor is it permissible to love something that Allaah forbade from loving. And loving any of the creatures as one loves Allaah is Shirk, as Allaah said:
And of mankind are some who take (for worship) others besides Allaah as rivals (to Allaah). They love them as they love Allaah... (Al-Baqarah, ayah 165)
And Allaah clarified that the believers love Allaah more than they love other than Allaah.
...But those who believe, love Allaah more (than anything else)... (Al-Baqarah, ayah 165)
Then after loving Allaah, the strongest love that one should have is love of the Messenger (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam). And it is upon the believer to love the Prophet more than his own self, his wealth, his children, and all of mankind (as comes in the hadeeth).
Then, he loves Islaam.
Then, he loves the believers - and the love of the parents should be foremost here if (the parents) are believers. And like this.
