Language of the Prayer (http://embodyislam.org/2011/08/25/language-of-the-prayer/)
Excerpt:
As for he who is unable to say these supplications in Arabic, he says them in his language except for the Faatihah. It must be emphasized that it is not correct to read the Faatihah, or other than it from the Qur`an,in other than the Arabic language.
So, he who does not know the Faatihah says in its place:
[I]SubhaanAllaah
wal-hamdulillaah
wa laa illaah illa Allaah
wAllaahu Akbar
wa laa hawla wa la quwwata illa bIllah al-'Aalee-ul-Adheem
This is due to the hadeeth of 'Abdullaah ibn Abee Awfaa [d. 87 AH] (radiallaahu 'anhu): A man came to the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) and said: I am unable to recite anything from the Qur`an. So teach me that which will suffice me in its place. So he (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: Say: SubhaanAllaah, wal-hamdulillaah, wa laa illaah illa Allaah, wAllaahu Akbar, wa laa hawla wa la quwwata illa bIllah al-'Aalee-ul-Adheem.
